This song paints a picture of a child raised by a single mother who dies young . The boy makes his own way as the lyric describes, “the rest of everything I got I learned it on the run” Then as a man, finds it hard to put down roots and settle down. He is chained to the legacy of a father he never knew and struggles to break away from the behavior that preceded him. He is still not sure he can do it and warns off his lover “ I don’t know if I can shake these restless bones “ Maybe the sins of the father have been bestowed upon the son. Is this restlessness inherited? does he have “rambling in his blood” The idea for this song came from my fathers experience, as his father left him when he was seven years old. The song is set up with a traditional form, acoustic instrumentation and vocal harmony. My approach to songs is to put the song first . With this story line I was seeking an authentic bluegrass sound. Grammy award winning bluegrass musician Michael Cleveland provided fiddle, banjo and mandolin. Ryan Boshart on bass with Tom White doing the backing vocals, mixing and editing. The song is presented with an accessible easy pick’n bluegrass form . I expect to be playing this tune with my own band when the summer concerts roll around again. It is a bluegrass er that would play well with fans of Del McCoury, Doc Watson, Tony Rice, Old Crow Medicine Show , The Avett Brothers, Jim Lauderdale and others .
